From Turo to direct rentals: the easiest path, without leaving Turo first
Updated October 30, 2026, 7 minute read
Hosts who ask how to leave Turo usually mean something narrower: how to stop depending on it. The easiest version isn't a switch, it's an overlap. Keep your Turo listings earning, add direct bookings beside them, and let the mix shift as your own demand grows. Here is that path in order, with what DriveIt does and what you still have to arrange yourself.
The rule that shapes everything
Turo doesn't allow taking a Turo booking or a Turo guest off the platform. Its gray market transaction policy prohibits payments outside Turo for trip costs, deposits and extensions, and says protection is voided for that trip, with fees on top. Read the policy itself before you plan anything.
So the transition is not 'move my Turo guests'. It's 'build demand that is mine from the start'. Nothing in this guide or in DriveIt contacts Turo guests about booking elsewhere.
Step 1: put your Turo operation in one place
Start where you are. Create a host account, invite DriveIt's co-host on Turo Teams, and enter your VINs: your cars come over as drafts with photos and prices, about five minutes each. Forward Turo's emails from Gmail so earnings and payouts flow in, and import Turo's CSV exports for history.
Now you're running Turo from DriveIt: calendar, check-ins, tolls, reviews, profit per car. Nothing has changed for your guests, and you've done the import that direct bookings need.
Step 2: arrange what Turo used to arrange for you
On a direct trip you are the rental company. These are yours to set up, and none of them comes from DriveIt:
- Insurance that covers renting cars to the public. Turo's protection plans only cover trips booked on Turo. Talk to a broker who works with rental operators before the first direct trip.
- A rental agreement reviewed by a local attorney. Guests sign it online in DriveIt, but the words are yours.
- Your business entity, license, and the rental taxes for your city and state. DriveIt suggests taxes per pickup location; an accountant confirms them.
- Your rules: deposit, mileage, fuel, late return and cleaning fees, written once.
Step 3: open your booking site beside Turo
In the same account, connect your Stripe account, pick a layout or let the AI site builder draft one, and put the site on your own domain. The cars you imported are already there with photos and prices; set direct prices as Turo's price plus or minus an amount or percent so they follow along.
Turn on ID checks and the agreement, set your deposit, and publish. From that moment a Turo trip closes those dates on your site, and a direct booking blocks the car on Turo. DriveIt is the only direct booking platform that does both, which is what makes running the two side by side safe.
Step 4: bring your own guests
This is the slow part and the one that decides how far you get. A Google Business Profile, your site on your social accounts and business cards, local partners who need cars every month, and airport or delivery pickup with a clear fee. The guide to finding direct guests goes through each channel.
Returning direct guests are the compounding part: make the second booking easy, and give them a reason to come back.
Step 5: shift the mix at your pace
Watch profit per car with both channels in it. As direct demand fills a car's calendar, you can raise its Turo price, snooze it on Turo for a stretch, or unlist it on Turo; as demand dips, list it again. You decide car by car and month by month, not all at once.
You may end up fully direct, or you may keep both, because Turo brings guests you'd never reach alone and direct keeps more of every trip. Either way the calendars, the money and the guests stay in one place.
What 'leaving Turo' would actually change
If a car comes off Turo entirely: no Turo protection on any of its trips, so your own policy carries everything; no Turo guest flow, so your demand has to be there first; and no Turo fees, so you keep the price minus Stripe's card fee. The fees guide shows the math on the same trip both ways.
Questions
Do I have to leave Turo to use DriveIt?
No. You can keep your Turo listings and add direct bookings on top. DriveIt keeps the two calendars in sync so the same car isn't booked twice.
Can I tell my Turo guests about my website?
No. Turo's rules don't allow taking a Turo booking or guest off the platform, and DriveIt doesn't message Turo guests about booking elsewhere. Build direct demand from your own site, Google, partners and repeat direct customers.
Does DriveIt include insurance for direct rentals?
No. You carry your own coverage for renting to the public. Talk to an insurance broker who works with rental operators.
